Does your book project need an eye-catching, good looking binding method? Should it lie completely flat when opened? Want it to be crush resistant and safe for even young children to use? Then look no further than plastic spiral binding.
Plastic spiral binding, also known as plastic coil, blends a snappy contemporary look with fabulous functionality. Binding elements are available in 16 standard colors and can even be PMS matched for large enough runs. These elements are “spun” through punched holes in book blocks and crimped in place, creating a sturdy binding style. The end result? Your books lie perfectly flat. Ask a chef if she would rather use a book that lies flat or needs to have a spine creased to keep pages from flipping during use? Better yet, plastic spiral bound books can be opened 360 degrees for single-hand use.
Plastic spiral binding offers many of the advantages of Wire-O binding with one unique difference: Plastic spiral binding elements have a “memory” that allows them to spring back to their original shape. If dropped, gripped tightly or stepped on, plastic binding elements don’t mash and will return to their spiral form.
Delta Printing Solutions can help you design your printed products to take full benefit of plastic spiral binding. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:
- Virtually crush-resistant. Plastic spiral binding elements are virtually crush-resistant and return to their original shape after being crushed. That’s why it’s a popular option for products that are frequently handled in classroom and industrial settings such as calendars, children’s books, cookbooks and instruction manuals.
- Safer alternative. Plastic spiral binding elements are also scratch-resistant, making it ideal for children’s books and on delicate surfaces as a safer alternative to wire elements.
- Plan for punching. Unlike other mechanical binding styles, plastic spiral binding requires holes to be punched to the top of the sheets. The height of the book determines how many holes will be punched. The holes should be centered along the binding edge. Leave a 3/8” margin between the binding edge and the outer edge of the holes.
- Array of sizes. Plastic spiral binding elements are widely available in standard sizes from 1/4” to 2” in diameter. In choosing the right spiral size, a rule of thumb is to add 1/8” to the book block thickness.
- Rainbow of colors. Plastic spiral binding elements are available in a rainbow of colors to deliver a professional appearance for your project. Matching your binding to your cover design or company colors can add a decorative touch that makes your pieces stand out. We offer a wide selection of attractive colors and quick turnaround times. Consult with us for options on your next mechanically bound project. We’ll be glad to assist you.
- Avoid crossovers. One drawback to plastic spiral is it causes pages to “step up” when opened, so it’s not a good choice for books with a lot of crossover images jumping the spine.
