No Book Binding Method Beats the Strength and Functionality of
PUR Glue Binding

Every graphic arts book project should begin with a clear description of the finished product and include a comprehensive production plan. Early in the job specification stage, critical decisions about binding style need to be made. If your book needs strength, flexibility and durability at an attractive price, consider PUR glue binding.

Over time, hot-melt EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) perfect bound books lose their strength and may lose pages.  This may be OK if a book has a short expected lifespan, but for many types of products, failing glue can be a serious problem. Until about twenty years ago, there wasn’t much of a solution … but then PUR arrived.

Why PUR?

PUR (polyurethane reactive) glue is without question the strongest adhesive binding style available. This glue cures to a super-strong, yet pliable state that yields a flexible spine with good lay flat qualities, especially when compared to traditional hot melt perfect bound products.

PUR glues aren’t subject to the normal limitations of hot-melt glues and don’t melt or crack, even when exposed to the most difficult environmental conditions. PUR’s bond is so strong that even previously Smyth sewn and notch-perfect bound books are routinely being bound with PUR glue.  PUR is an excellent choice for tackling tough adhesive binding jobs such as:

  • Cross-grain impositions. Use PUR when your paper grain isn’t parallel to the spine.
  • Thick paper. If your stock is 80# coated text or heavier, or has a lot of clay filler, use PUR.
  • Coatings in spine. Use PUR when your signatures or covers have ink, varnish, UV or other coatings bleeding into the gutter.
  • Rough environment. Books that will be exposed to extreme temperatures or moist conditions should be bound with PUR.
  • Heavy usage. Use PUR for books that will be frequently opened or closed by end users.
